Adelaide Lucille
I've been trying to build a grassroots campaign around a new name selection for my yet-to-be-named unborn daughter. I say "yet-to-be-named" somewhat gingerly because Kristy is pretty much set on Olivia (despite its obscene popularity).

I was at the grocery store a couple of weeks ago and ran into one my neighbors (who lives about 4 doors down). We stood around and chit-chatted for a little while about life and whatnot. I brought her up to speed on the pregnancy status (of course). Just out of curiosity I asked her if she had any girl names (they have one boy now with plans for more). She stated that if their first child was a girl, it would have been named "Lucille" after the child's paternal grandmother. Well, the name of my paternal Grandma is "Ada Lucille" - but she always went by Lucille - so I said, "You know what? My paternal grandmother is a Lucille!" And then I said, "Hey, what do you think about the name 'Adelaide Lucille'?"

She said, and I quote.... "I love it! That's a great name! You could call her 'Addy'."

Ever since then I've been asking anyone and everyone what they think of the name. Should my newborn daughter be named "Olivia Louise" or should she be named "Adelaide Lucille"? Cast your vote in the comments. Thanks in advance!

Re: Adelaide Lucille

I like it! I also like Olivia, but you're right -- it's been very popular lately. I still think you should consider SuSE to go along with Berkeley. ;)

Re: Adelaide Lucille

Suse (pronounced suzy?) is probably too common (and therefore obscene). He would have to go with something like gentoo, ubuntu, libra, debi (short for debian), and then there is also Mandriva.

Re: Adelaide Lucille

I wouldn't name a daughter Olivia. If I were naming daughters I would choose names like Tamra, Tonya, Kristine, Kathryn, Karen, or maybe Laura.

Re: Adelaide Lucille

It would be an honor to have your daughter named after my beautiful mother. I think that Brent would take great honor in being able to call her Ada.

Re: Adelaide Lucille

Dunno. Not a fan of Olivia, not because it is popular, just don't like the name. Adelaide Lucille? Seems to go more with your family naming structure--Odd and Novel, somewhat snootie. If you are looking for uncommon (see above comment about naming pattern)then Adelaide Lucille is for you. Though Addy is cute, Adelaide rhymes well with marmelaide.

Re: Adelaide Lucille

I know two Adelaides that go by "Addy", one is 1 the other 4. It's a more common name among toddlers than "Olivia" among those I know. Lest you think it's completely unique.

Re: Adelaide Lucille

I like both names and with a little girl on the way, we've got naming on the mind as well. I've always been a fan of Olivia, but it's officially "off our list" due to popularity (we have two friends with daughters named Olivia). We've been focusing on older names...names of our grandmother's era and for that reason I like Adelaide. I also like it because I think it has many nickname opportunities even beyond Addy (Addie) -- Laidy (or Lady) can be cute, Ade and of course there's always Lucy! Of course, with Risk18 as head of our household, nicknames may be more prevalent with us. = )

Re: Adelaide Lucille

Well, there is "Ada" which - as my brother alluded to in a previous comment (while posting under the full name of my father, Floyd Robert, who goes by just Robert) - isn't considered to be a very flattering name. Or at least, my Grandma (Ada Lucille, who went by Lucille), didn't think it was.

Re: Adelaide Lucille

Adelaide Lucille. I like it.

I think the trick is to find something that is a bit unique, but not too odd (like Suri or Apple, yikes).
