Movie Review: Persepolis

Title:Persepolis (2007)
Rating:5/10

Persepolis is a French animated film (we watched with English subtitles) about a young woman (Marjane Satrapi) growing up in Iran where she was witness to both the Shah's dictatorship, the subsequent Iranian revolution, and the decade-long Iran/Iraq war. The film is autobiographical. The woman goes through the typical teen rebellious angst, but finds few outlets in Iran. She emigrates to Europe and but also finds it is hard to fit in.

I heard about Persepolis last year from the Oscar buzz it received due to its nomination for an Oscar as Best Animated Film (where it competed against the likes of Ratatouille and Surf's Up). The movie is quite political in nature, but the animation makes it watchable (I suspect the filmmakers chose to animation for this very purpose).
