Movie Review: Who Killed The Electric Car?

Title:Who Killed The Electric Car? (2006)
Rating:6/10

Like nuclear power, the electric car is an idea whose time will someday come... but the American society at large just isn't ready to wholly embrace it yet. The film, Who Killed The Electric Car?, explores some of the reasons why General Motors silently killed the EV1 product line. By and large, the film does a good job at presenting the case for electric cars: high efficiency, zero emissions, low operating costs. Clearly, an electric car would seem to be an ideal solution for the average daily commuter... especially in California (where the EV1 was offered).

So why did the EV1 fail where it seemingly should have succeeded in spades? Well, the film explores several different explanations and concludes it was a combination of several factors. However, it was clearly biased against two large corporations that the author/director "blames" for the EV1's ultimate removal from the market - those being General Motors themselves and the "Big Oil" companies that were operating behind the curtain to protect their interests. The bias was heavy enough to be fairly distracting to the underlying (legitimate) message about conservation and good sense. That distraction was compounded by the needless emotional petition made on behalf of the jilted EV1 owners and their mock "funerals" for their beloved vehicles. This was obviously added for dramatic effect, but I think the film would have been more effective without it.
