Symphony Review: Pepe Romero
We attended the symphony tonight to hear a guitar recital by Pepe Romero, a guitar virtuoso. Kristy and I have been to one other guitar recital (perhaps three seasons ago?) by classical guitarist Eliot Fisk. At the time we were stunned by the beauty and complexity of the sounds produced by the hands of a guitar master. Mr. Romero's recital was absolutely up to our expectations. He performed 13 numbers, all by Spanish composers including works by Albéniz, Tárrega, and others. Unlike Mr. Fisk, who used a microphone to introduce each piece to the audience, Mr. Romero did not speak to the audience except in between the performance of two pieces composed by his father, Celedonio Romero. He used the opportunity to inform us that he was playing music composed by his father on a guitar manufactured by his son. Very cool.

Kristy and I were shaking our heads during much of the performance as we were just stunned by the skill it takes to play the pieces. It was truly a wonder to behold. If you weren't actually watching Mr. Romero play or if you just closed your eyes and listened to the music, you may be fooled into believing that there was not just one performer, but two - one playing rhythm and one playing lead. But it was just one man and one guitar. Incredible.

I found a sample of Mr. Romero's recording of one of the pieces we heard tonight, that of Francisco Tárrega's Gran jota. It is the last minute of the piece (which is 10:30 in length). Give it a listen - here.
